History Of CBI

Congregation Brothers of Israel was founded in 1898, and was the only Orthodox temple in Long Branch. The Shul began in the home of Benjamin Feinberg, but quickly outgrew those tight quarters. After bouncing around for about 20 years from location to location in the downtown Long Branch area, the congregation eventually, on Aug. 4, 1918, laid the cornerstone of what would become the Second Avenue sanctuary, a space it occupied until 1977.

The architecture of the synagogue is significant as a vernacular/eclectic interpretation of the Romanesque Revival style. The synagogue was significant in the religious development of Long Branch.

Brothers of Israel then moved to a new site, 250 Park Ave in Elberon, which has been its home for the past 48 years. We still host daily prayer & Yom Tov services and events.

In 2002 the congregation grew larger in the West End section of Long Branch, hence we felt the need to open our satellite location in a small apartment, eventually grew larger into two apartments, then three.  It was then we knew we needed a permanent structure to be built.  38 Sternberger Ave opened in 2022. It is a modern building which seats over 250 congregants, mostly in the summer months.
